Antibacterial capacity of cavity disinfectants against Streptococcus mutans and their effects on shear bond strength of a self-etch adhesive

Abstract: We evaluated the antibacterial properties of three disinfectants [2% chlorhexidine (CHX), 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and 0.01% urushiol)] against Streptococcus mutans and their effects on bond strength of Scotchbond TM Universal. The reduction in bacterial growth was evaluated by the colony counting method. Total 105 specimens were assigned to seven groups, according to surface pretreatment: control group (C) without pretreatment; chlorhexidine gluconate with rinse (CR) or without rinse (CD); NaOCl with r… Show more

“…In this study, urushiol treatment also showed a similar microtensile bond strength to that of the control group, which is consistent with a previous study 22) . That study reported urushiol would remove the overlying contaminants (smear layer and smear plugs).…”

“…Thus, the first hypothesis, no difference in the antibacterial activity against S. mutans among the disinfectants, was accepted. Cha and Shin 22) reported that CHX, NaOCl, and urushiol exhibited potent antibacterial activity on S. mutans. They found that no S. mutans survived after 30 min of incubation with these disinfectants.…”

“…Due to its potent, Dijken demonstrated that acceptable bonded restorations were achieved after pretreatment of a tooth with NaOCl 14) . Since then, the benefit of NaOCl against bacteria on dentin surfaces has also been demonstrated [15][16][17] . QACs, such as cetylpyridinium chloride or benzalkonium chloride, are widely used as antibacterial agents 18) .…”
