Antibacterial and cytotoxic effect of honey mediated copper nanoparticles synthesized using ultrasonic assistance

Abstract: In this study, a comparative study of effect using honey on copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) via simple, environmentally friendly process and inexpensive route was reported. Honey and ascorbic acid act as stabilizing and reducing agents with the assistance of sonochemical method. The products were characterized using UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared… Show more

“…This method utilises bio-reagents such as bacteria, fungi, enzymes, and plants as both reducing and stabilizing agents [8,9,10]. Amongst all, plants-mediated synthesis is preferred as the morphology of resulting NPs can be easily manipulated by varying different parameters [11,12,13,14]. Each part of plants can be utilised for NPs synthesis, leaves being the most common part as compared to others such as bark, fruit, seed, flower, root and peel [15].…”

“…In the past, 60 types of xanthones had been isolated from the GM pericarp [17]. Similarly, GM has also been associated with other pharmacological actions such as antitumor, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activities [12,13,14,18,19]. Mechanisms of anticancer xanthones have previously been revealed, including induction of apoptosis through regular cell death pathways, suppression of cell proliferation, and inhibition of metastasis by blocking the anti-apoptotic molecules and cell cycle arrest [20].…”

“…Our results are in agreement with recent studies which have approved cytotoxicity of metal nanoparticles. 61,[68][69][70] Present study exhibits high potentiality of Cu 2 O for its anticancer activity as conrmed by concentration dependent cytotoxicity of Cu 2 O nanoparticles on K562 cells in addition to lower toxicity to normal cells. However, several researches are underway to investigate the mechanism of Cu 2 O action and possible pathways of cytotoxicity and their side effects.…”

“…MTS assay was performed as previously described [ 59 , 61 , 62 , 63 ] to evaluate the cellular killing effect of NCs. For both HCT116 and CCD112, 5,000 cells per well (100 µL/well) were seeded onto 96-well plates and incubated overnight in a 5% CO 2 incubator at 37 °C for complete adherence.…”
