Antibacterial and Bonding Properties of Universal Adhesive Dental Polymers Doped with Pyrogallol

Abstract: This study investigated the antibacterial activity, bond strength to dentin (SBS), and ultra-morphology of the polymer–dentin interface of experimental adhesive systems doped with pyrogallol (PY), which is a ubiquitous phenolic moiety that is present in flavonoids and polyphenols. A universal adhesive containing 4-META and 10-MDP was used in this study. PY behaves as an antioxidant and anti-cancerogenic agent and it was incorporated into the adhesive at different concentrations (0.5 and 1 wt.%). The antibacter… Show more

“…However, the stability of bond strength of a resin adhesive bonded to tooth tissues in the oral cavity is an important aspect to promote optimal dental restoration. In addition, a severe degradation over time of the resin–dentin interface and the increase in nanoleakage lead to limited bond durability [ 42 , 43 ].…”

“…Not only does this required infiltration pose a challenge in an organic tissue like dentin [ 14 , 32 , 33 ], recent literature seems to agree that the quality of the adhesive bond becomes even more threatened in erosion [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 13 , 34 , 35 ]. The search for materials able to improve the longevity of contemporary restorations, specifically functional materials with novel molecules is still ongoing in present investigations [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…Modern universal adhesive systems can be used in self-etch, etch-and-rinse, or a selective enamel-etching mode. Their bonding efficiency is still being investigated, as the durability and stability of the dentinadhesive interface are limited [6]. Various studies have described techniques or strategies available to enhance universal adhesives and dentin bond strength including OptiBond Solo Plus [7].…”
