Antibacterial activity of two MTA‐based root canal sealers

Abstract: MTA Fillapex and Endofill had an antibacterial effect against E. faecalis before setting, but none of the sealers maintained antibacterial activity after setting, despite the high pH of the MTA-based materials.

“…Such discrepancies are probably due to methodology. [9] The antimicrobial activity of MTA was reported by Torabinejad et al, who detected its efficiency against some facultative bacteria; however, no activity was found against E. faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Escherichia coli or against anaerobic bacteria.…”

“…It has high radioopacity, low solubility, low expansion during setting, promotes deposition of hard tissue and known for its antibacterial effect. [9] Real Seal SE (SybronEndo, Orange, CA) is fourth generation methacrylate resin based sealer, in that they have further eliminated the separate etching/ bonding step. [10] Acroseal (Septodont, St. Maurdes-Fosses Cedex, France) is calcium hydroxide-based sealer, it appears to have lower solubility than other calcium hydroxide sealers, probably because of its epoxy resin component.…”

“…14,15 When evaluated in suspension with the crushed cement, the MTA Fillapex presented high alkaline pH values. 9 However, when immediately evaluated after mixing, the aforementioned pH value was significantly lower than ordinary gray or white MTA. 16 Nonetheless, there are no comparative studies with other routinely used cements for root canal filling.…”

“…MTA Fillapex presents effective antimicrobial activity against E. faecalis before setting, but not after setting, despite its high pH level. 9 Its bond strength to radicular dentin exhibits the lowest values when compared with another MTA-based cement (I Root SP). 10 Although the MTA Fillapex manufacturer claims that it has excellent radiopacity, easy handling and long working time, their physicochemical properties, such as flow and setting time are scientifically unknown.…”
