Antibacterial activity of plumbagin derivative-rich Plumbago indica root extracts and chemical stability

Abstract: The extraction studies and a one-step purification of the crude extract of Plumbago indica using silica-gel vacuum chromatography provided a plumbagin derivative-rich P. indica root extract (PPE). The PPE was standardised to contain total plumbagin derivatives not less than 13% w/w. Antibacterial activities of the standardised PPE and three naphthoquinones, plumbagin, elliptinone and 3,3'-biplumbagin, against Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were evaluated by using … Show more

“…The root contains the highest amount of plumbagin (0.17% w/w) among Plumbago species and is the part mostly contained in the medicinal remedies [ 10 ]. Plumbagin has been claimed for various biological activities, i.e., anthelmintic [ 4 , 9 , 11 ], antimalarial [ 12 ], antibacterial [ 6 ], antifungal [ 13 ], anti-inflammatory [ 14 , 15 ], immunosuppressive [ 16 ], abortifacient [ 8 ], anticancer [ 14 , 17 - 20 ], and antidiabetic activities [ 21 ].…”

“…The in vitro antibacterial activity of plumbagin is well known as several publications reported its activity against various bacterial organisms (Lajubutu et al 1995;de Paiva et al 2003;Jeyachandran et al 2009;Kaewbumrung and Panichayupakaranant 2014) including S. aureus. For instance, Nair et al (2016) described promising in vitro and ex vivo anti-staphylococcal activities of plumbagin.…”
