Antibacterial activity of lidocaine in mixtures with Diprivan

Abstract: We have studied the antibacterial activity of different concentrations of 0.005-2% lidocaine (lignocaine) in mixtures with Diprivan (propofol), against micro-organisms commonly implicated in sepsis as a result of extrinsically contaminated Diprivan. Bacterial colony counts were reduced progressively with increasing concentrations of lidocaine. Bacteriostatic and bactericidal concentrations of lidocaine were 0.2-2%. Lidocaine 2% was not bactericidal for one of the seven organisms tested. By inhibiting bacterial… Show more

“…The result corresponds to another study¹ which states that Lidocaine has antibacterial effect with bacteriostatic characteristic against test bacteria¹, and is supported by a study conducted by Gajraj et al 2 which suggest that Lidocaine has anti-bacterial power against 2 test bacteria when it is mixed with Diprivan. Lidocaine, however, is less potential compared to Procaine and Prilocaine.…”

“…Since then, interest in the antimicrobial activities of local anaesthetics have spread to clinical disciplines as diverse as dentistry (33), anaesthetics (34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42), otorhinolaryngology (43), pulmonology (44) and ophthalmology (45,46).…”

“…1,5 The absence of preservatives in the propofol preparation may support microbial growth. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Admixture of thiopentone, 15 lidocaine [16][17][18][19] or disodium edetate 20 diminishes microbial growth in propofol, although microbial destruction is not achieved. Because of this risk, the manufacturer's specific recommendations (Fresenius Kabi Pharmaceutical.…”
