Antibacterial activity of efrotomycin.

Abstract: Efrotomycin is a narrow spectrum antibiotic. Among the genera tested for susceptibility in vitro it is most active against isolates of Moraxella, Pasteurella, Yersinia, Haeniophilus, Streptococcus and Corynebacterium. The drug is as active by oral administration as by the subcutaneous route. Blood levels rise rapidly to high concentrations, after oral dosing, and are prolonged. Two peaks occur which may indicate biliary excretion and reabsorption. Urinary excretion is minimal. The high blood concentrations exp… Show more

“…Antibacterial Susceptibilities B. bronchiseptica is susceptible to various antimicrobial agents both in vivo and in vitro (6, 55,152). However, there have been problems in providing and maintaining effective concentrations of such agents on infected membrane sur-faces without causing unwanted residues in tissues, particularly in animals used for producing human food.…”

“…The finding in laboratory experiments of mutant E. coli and B. subtilis strains resistant to elfamycin antibiotics has been described previously (196,216). Efrotomycin is rapidly absorbed orally (93). It had no influence on S. enterica serotype Typhimurium prevalence, shedding, and resistance profile in swine (118).…”

“…In addition to great chemical similarity, these antibiotics are all primarily active against a limited number of Gram-positive bacteria, notably bacilli (3,7,16,17), the narrow antibacterial spectrum being ascribed to inefficient uptakes.…”
