Antibacterial activity of cured dental resin incorporating the antibacterial monomer MDPB and an adhesion-promoting monomer

Abstract: In this study, the antibacterial monomer 12-methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide (MDPB) and an adhesion-promoting phosphoric monomer were incorporated into Bis-GMA-based dental resin and its antibacterial activity after curing was investigated. The experimental resin containing MDPB and 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) was polymerized and washed with methanol, and the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects against Streptococcus mutans were determined. Growth of S. mutans was strongly inh… Show more

“…Therefore, an antibacterial monomer -MDPB (12-methacryloyloxydodecyl pyridinium bromide)-, which is a quaternary ammonium compound with a methacryloyl group, has been added to the formulation of the primer of an experimental self-etching primer adhesive system (ABF; Kuraray Co., Ltd., Osaka, Japan) (5). By co-polymerization of MDPB with other monomers, the antibacterial agent is immobilized in the polymer matrix and inhibits bacterial growth on material surface by means of non-released immobilized bactericidal agents (6).…”

“…Nevertheless, a gap-free interface seems more important in preventing secondary caries than the release of fluoride or other substances such as 12-methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide (MDPB) [29,30] from materials alone [58,64] or the bioactive intrinsic potential of the adhesives [28].…”

“…The bond strength to enamel was clinically acceptable for orthodontic brackets, but was not effective on dentin. A new monomer, methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide, was synthesized, and investigated as an antibacterial agent [9][10][11][12][13] . Composite material containing the monomer inhibited the growth of S. mutans, and no elution of the antibacterial agent was observed from the material.…”
