Antibacterial activity of components from Lomatium californicum

Abstract: The isolation, characterization and bioactivity testing of compounds from Lomatium californicum (Nutt.) are described. Ethyl acetate and hexane extracts of the roots of L. californicum were subjected to vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC), flash column chromatography (FCC) and separation by normal- and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Six compounds were isolated successfully and characterized by 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experimentation. The bioactivity of the known … Show more

“…Of these, falcarindiol (1) had the greatest antimicrobial activity and a strong additive not Gram-negative bacteria [24,[35][36][37]. It is possible that the activity in the fraction was potentiated by the co-isolated fatty acids, and these could have membrane permeabilising activity.…”

“…For example, coniferyl ferulate has antibacterial activity, antioxidant and anti-Alzheimer properties, and it was also shown to have a potential role in reversing multidrug resistance mechanisms acquired by tumor cells [4244]. Feruloyl-CoA:monolignol transferase (AsFMT) from Chinese angelica ( Angelica sinensis ) is a BAHD enzyme involved in the synthesis of coniferyl ferulate by coupling feruloyl-CoA to the monolignol coniferyl alcohol [45].…”

“…Purification of the active ethyl acetate-soluble partition of a methanol extract of the bark of Haematoxylon brasiletto (Table 1) led to the isolation of eight known compounds: hematoxylin (1), brazilin (2) (Craig et al, 1965), caffeic acid (3) (Chou et al, 2006), methyl gallate (Kubo et al, 2004) (4), gallic acid (5) (Ani et al, 2006), phloroglucinol (6) (Yamaki et al, 1994), 4-hydroxycinnamic acid (7) (van der Watt and Pretorius, 2001;Souza et al, 2007), and 5-methoxypsoralen (8) (Manderfeld et al, 1997) (Fig. 1).…”
