Antibacterial Activity of Biosecur® Citrus Extract Surface Cleaner Against Vibrio Vulnificus

Abstract: This study evaluated the antibacterial activity of Biosecur® citrus extract surface cleaner against Vibrio vulnificus using plate count method. Two concentrations, 0.5% and 2% of Biosecur® surface cleaner were plated on Vibrio vulnificus Agar (VVA) and tested for reduction of Vibrio vulnificus. In order to investigate the lasting residual activity of Biosecur®, antibacterial activity tests were also performed at time intervals up to 2.5 h after Biosecur® was plated on VVA. Biosecur® showed 6-log reduction of V… Show more

“…From all compounds tested, only citrus extract 0.25% revealed a notable antimicrobial efficacy (>5 log 10 ) toward initial S. mutans biofilms similar to the positive controls CHX 0.2% and CPC 0.05%. This compound is a commercially available product comprising extracts from various citrus fruits (i.e., citrus reticulata , citrus aurantium amara, and citrus aurantium sinensis ), which has already been shown to have pronounced antimicrobial efficacy toward planktonic cultures of Vibrio vulnificus (Cormier, Scott, & Janes, ). In general, citrus fruits are known to be a rich source of phytochemicals, such as flavonoids and alkaloids, which show potent antimicrobial activity (Nogata et al., ; Oikeh, Omoregie, Oviasogie, & Oriakhi, ).…”

“…In this context, citrus extract in liposomal form has been described as a natural, non-toxic, chemical-free antiseptic agent, which is composed of citrus bioflavonoids derived from some specific layers of citrus fruits; this natural compound was primarily developed in the food processing industry, because of its effective, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity both against Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria without the need of adopting nonorganic, synthetic preservatives [ 12 ].…”

“…Of these plant extracts, citrus fruit extracts are showing an acceptable antibacterial activity against a broad range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Therefore, they are recommended as feed additives to improve animal health (Alvarez-Ordóñez et al, 2013), to control food-borne pathogens (Iturriaga et al, 2012; Vardaka et al, 2016; Tsiraki et al, 2018), against helminths (Abdelqader et al, 2012), as surface cleaners (Cormier et al, 2013) or even against insect pests on plants (Hollingsworth, 2005). BIOCITRO ® 1 is a commercialized citrus fruit extract obtained from organic cultures of grapefruit ( Citrus paradisi ), tangerine ( Citrus reticulata blanco ), bergamot ( Citrus aurantium ssp.…”
