Antibacterial Activity Evaluation of Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae) Crude Extracts Against Selected Bacterial Pathogens

Abstract: Methanol, ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate and hot water extracts of different parts (leaves, seeds, fruits and twigs fractions) of Psidium guajava L. were investigated for their antibacterial activities against 8 bacterial isolates. Inhibitory effects of P. guajava L. extracts have been screened by disc- diffusion method (Zone of inhibition, ZI), activity index (AI) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination. Ciprofloxacin antibiotic was used as standard for P. guajava L. antimicrobial activity c… Show more

“…The microdilution broth susceptibility test was performed according to Saleh and Al-Mariri [ 41 ]. In 96-well microtiter plates, three replicates of five dilutions of extracts (0.5, 1.25, 2.5, 3.75 and 5 mg.mL −1 ) and an antibacterial (ampicillin) in LB broth were prepared.…”

“…The inhibitory effects of Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta), Dilophus spiralis (Phaeophyta), and Jania Rubens (Rhodophyta) against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were examined by Saleh and Al-Mariri 34 . It was hypothesized that Phaeophyta extracts were more effective against tested isolates than Chlorophyta and Rhodophyta because they contained more phenolic compounds.…”
