Antibacterial activity and heavy metal removal efficiency of electrospun medium molecular weight chitosan/nylon-6 nanofibre membranes

Abstract: Chitosan/nylon-6 nanofibres with antibacterial activity properties were prepared by electrospinning a chitosan/nylon-6 solution (containing medium molecular weight chitosan). Nanofibres with diameters in the range of 139-190 nm were obtained. The yield of low concentration chitosan/nylon-6 nanofibres was higher than that of high concentration chitosan/nylon-6 nanofibres. The affinity of chitosan toward lead was studied using a Pb(NO) solution containing Pb(II) ions as the heavy metal solution. The rejection of… Show more

“…In antibacterial PET fibers, the antibacterial agent used determines the preparation method and the antibacterial effect of antibacterial fibers. According to the composition of antibacterial agents, antibacterial fibers can be divided into inorganic systems, organic systems, and natural systems. The preparation of antibacterial PET fibers mainly includes chemical grafting modification, melt blending, electrospinning, postfinishing, and so on. Vazquez et al added nano-ZnO to recycled PET (r-PET) solution and prepared ZnO-NPs/r-PET composite fibers by electrospinning, which have good antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis .…”

“…It is also antimicrobial. As CS interacts with the tissue of the host, its interaction with different cellular activities related to wound healing can expedite the recovery process [ 10 , 18 ]. Thus, PCL/Chitosan combined for the coating procedure is preferable to employing than using two ingredients separately to improve biological and mechanical performance [ 19 ].…”
