Antiarrhythmic Effect of Magnolol and Honokiol during Acute Phase of Coronary Occlusion in Anesthetized Rats: Influence of L-NAME and Aspirin

Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the in vivo effect of magnolol and honokiol on the acute phase of coronary ligation in the presence of nitric oxide inhibitor (L-NAME) or cyclooxygenase inhibitor (aspirin). After Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized with urethane, the changes of ventricular arrhythmia induced by coronary ligation for 30 min were determined with or without pretreatment with study medications. The incidence and duration of ventricular arrhythmia were significantly reduced after intravenous p… Show more

“…As two important phenolic lignans, honokiol and magnolol are the two major bioactive constituents in Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis. Recent pharmacological investigations show that honokiol and magnolol have a broad range of physiological activities such as anti-inflammatory [35], anti-oxidant [36], anti-tumor [37], anti-bacteria [38], anti-arrhythmia [39], anti-platelet [40], etc. The total content of honokiol and magnolol is an important parameter for evaluating the quality of Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis.…”

“…To date, honokiol has been shown to exert many pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory, 36) anti-arrhythmic, 37) anxiolytic, 35) antitumor, 33) antithrombotic, 38) antiarthritic, 34) and anti-allergic 39) effects. However, the molecular targets underlying the numerous activities of honokiol have been poorly understood.…”
