Anti-tumour effects of elatol, a marine derivative compound obtained from red algae Laurencia microcladia

Abstract: Elatol promotes a delay in the cell cycle, probably in the G(1)/S transition, activating the apoptotic process and this could be responsible, at least in part, for the in-vivo effects observed. Taken together, the in-vitro and in-vivo experiments suggested that elatol has anti-tumour properties. Further studies should be conducted to clarify the mechanism of action.

“…This substance showed of IC 50 1.1 µM in L929 cells and IC 50 of 10.1 µM in B16F10 cells. It also caused a delay in the transition from the G1/S phase of the cell cycle and induces apoptosis [84].…”

“…(2012) shows an anticancer effect by reducing cell viability of B16F10 (melanoma murine), A549 (human lung carcinoma), DU145 (carcinoma of human prostate), L929 (mouse fibroblasts), and MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma). In addition, treatment with elatol was able to reduce tumor growth in vivo in mice inoculated by B16F10 cells (Campos et al, 2012). Another study indicates that the polyether of Laurencia viridis has cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell lines Jurkat (acute T cell leukemia), MM144 (myeloma), HeLa (cervix adenocarcinoma), and CADO-ES1 (Ewing sarcoma human).…”

“…2 c) isolated from Laurencia microcladia, down regulate the cyclin-D1, cyclin-E, cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) 2 and cdk4. Elatol has been reported to decrease the expression of bcl-xl and an increase in bak, caspase-9 and p53 expression resulting in activation of the apoptotic process in in vivo condition in C57Bl6 mice [32].…”
