Anti-Taenia solium metacestodes antibodies in serum from blood donors from four cities of Triângulo Mineiro area, Minas Gerais, Brazil, 1995

Abstract: Serological survey was performed to detect IgG antibodies anti-Taenia solium metacestodes in blood donors of Hemocentro Regional de Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. A total of 1133 sera from blood donors coming from four cities of Triângulo Mineiro area were analyzed by the indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Specific IgG antibodies were found in 5.6% of the studied population, showing differences in the positive rates according to their origin: Aragua… Show more

“…was thus demonstrated (12,15). These antigens are responsible for the cross-reactivity between both parasites, even though previous studies using whole-metacestode extracts have demonstrated that both the ELISA and immunoblotting may be considered useful tools for epidemiological screening of NC (30,34,38). Therefore, as cross-reactivity between T. solium and E. granulosus occurs in screening tests such as the ELISA, additional assays are required to validate the results, preferentially by using alternative assay designs with purified and more specific antigens.…”

“…Considering that there is minimal phylogenetic proximity between Taenia sp. and Strongyloides sp., these results may be related to the presence of infections with both species (T. solium and S. stercoralis) in these individuals, since human cysticercosis is considered endemic (30,38) and S. stercoralis hyperendemic (26) in the city of Uberlândia within the Triângulo Mineiro region.…”

“…Human cysticercosis is widely distributed in Brazil (Silveira-Lacerda 2002, Prestes-Carneiro et al 2006, Sato et al 2006, Ishida et al 2011, Silva et al 2007) and its occurrence is usually associated with the exposure to risk factors such as: pig rearing together with kitchen gardening (Ishida et al 2011), consumption of under-cooked pork (Prasad et al 2007), human defecation in inappropriate areas and the lack of hand washing after defecating (Weka et al 2013). Moreover, Pinto et al (2002) compared the cysticercosis occurrence in swine slaughtered with and without sanitary inspection.…”

“…In Brazil, the majority of the reported cases of anti-T. solium metacestode IgG antibodies are related to cases of disease being treated 17 detected specific IgG antibodies in 13.5% of the studied population. The proximity between the cities with the same socio-economic and sanitary characteristics permitting the identification of geographic niches of the disease, with the consequent creation of satisfactory mechanism of intervention reducing the impact of the disease on public health.…”

“…The indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) have been proved to be adequate for serum screening in cysticercosis studies 3,6,17 . Using these two methods, VIANNA et al 19 in a seroepidemiological study of the human population in various geographical regions of Brazil estimated the frequency of cysticercosis seroprevalence at 8.11% in the South-east region, 5.81% in the North-east, 5.3% in the Central West and 3.5% in the Southern part of the country.…”
