Anti-Oxidative and Anti-Obesity Effect of Combined Extract and Individual Extract of Samjunghwan

Abstract: Objectives: This study is to confirm the effect of combined extract and individual extract of Samjunghwan (SJH) in anti-oxidative and anti-obesity effect. Methods: Combined ethanol extract of readily made SJH and individual ethanol extract of Atractylodes japonica, Cortex lycii radicis, and Morus alba Linne was combined after the extraction. To evaluate the anti-oxidative effect of SJH, total phenol compound and 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging ability were conducted. Real-time quan… Show more

“…ROS provokes lipid peroxidation followed by induction of the inflammatory response as well as activation of hepatic stellate cells, ultimately leading to fibrogenesis3536. In keeping with a previous report18, in our study, mSJH exhibited marked antioxidant properties in terms of its in vitro DPPH radical and ROS scavenging activities and ability to suppress the hepatic lipid oxidation in HFD-fed mice. Earlier in vivo and in vitro studies demonstrated that antioxidant properties of herbal extracts may play a significant role in protecting against lipid-induced NASH37.…”

“…This formulation has long been used as an anti-aging therapeutic agent16. Recent in vitro and in vivo studies have reported a number of beneficial effects of SJH or its fermented products including neuroprotective17, anti-oxidant18, and anti-obesity19 properties, and several studies have shown a beneficial effect of Mori fructus , the major constituent of SJH, on obesity and related complications2021. In vitro and in vivo studies have found that Mori fructus exerts hypolipidemic effects through the modulation of lipid homeostasis22.…”

“…This formulation has long been used as an anti-aging therapeutic agent ( Lee and Jeong, 2006 ). Several studies have reported a number of beneficial effects of SJH or its fermented products, including neuroprotective and anti-oxidant activities ( Kim et al, 2010 ; Han et al, 2014 ). Additionally, there is substantial evidence based on in vitro and in vivo experiments of the anti-obesity and hypolipidemic activities of SJH or its ingredients ( Peng et al, 2011 ; Song M.Y.…”
