Anti‐myocardial Ischemia Effect and Components of Litchi Pericarp Extracts

Abstract: Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) is a famous fruit in south China, and it is also effective for chest tightness or chest pain, irritability, flatulence, epigastric pain and neuralgic pain, hernia pain and testicular swelling, cough, etc. It is valued because a great amount of polyphenol was found in litchi pericarp. In this paper, we got litchi pericarp pure extract by a simple purification method, then evaluated its activity to clear oxygen free radicals in vitro, and evaluated its myocardial protection effect… Show more

“…It has been proven that these phenolics have a strong scavenging ability and antioxidant capacity [1014]. Not only that, but lychee pericarp, as a medicinal material, also has the capacity to dehumidify and stop dysentery and hemostasis, which reduces blood lipids, and has anti-cardiovascular disease [15] and anti-cancer [1618] effects.…”

“…Additionally, mangiferin, a polyphenol found in mango and papaya, has been found to decrease plasma lipids and inflammatory levels in mice with high fat diet-induced vascular injury through the PTEN/Akt/eNOS signaling pathway at 20 µM [64]. Moreover, in an in vivo myocardial ischemia rat model, 200 mg/kg lychee extract was found to exert myocardial protection through bcl-2/bax gene expression [65].…”

“…In a previous study, the anti‐myocardial ischemic effect of resin‐purified ethanol extracts of litchi peep was evaluated in vivo using an acute myocardial ischemia rat model (Chen, Li, et al., 2017). Results showed a dose‐dependent (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg bw) protective effect of the extract on myocardial ischemia injury following a 5‐day oral administration.…”

“…Results showed a dose‐dependent (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg bw) protective effect of the extract on myocardial ischemia injury following a 5‐day oral administration. The extract inhibited electrocardiogram depressions, reduced myocardial ischemia injury, improved cardiac enzyme indicators (creatinine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase) in serum, and increased the antioxidant status in serum and myocardial tissue (Chen, Li, et al., 2017). There was an increase in the activity of serum nitric oxide synthase, as well the myocardial tissue mRNA expression of eNOS and Bcl‐2 and a concomitant decrease in myocardial tissue mRNA expression of Bax (Chen, Li, et al., 2017), which suggests that the anti‐myocardial effect of the peel extract may be mediated by its endothelial protective, myocardial antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, and anti‐apoptotic effects.…”
