Anti-Mullerian Hormone and Inhibin B in the Definition of Ovarian Aging and the Menopause Transition

Abstract: AMH, an endocrine marker that reflects the transition of resting primordial follicles to growing follicles, declined to a time point 5 yr prior to the FMP; this may represent a critical biological juncture in the menopause transition. Low and nondetectable levels inhibin B levels also were observed 4-5 yr prior to the FMP but were less predictive of time to FMP or age at FMP.

“…One study suggests that AMH levels decrease to undetectable levels 5 years before the onset of the menopausal status (date of last menses), so undetectable plasma levels of AMH suggest a pending menopausal status (Sowers et al 2008). However, longitudinal studies are required in order to establish if different or undetectable levels of AMH could predict timing of onset of postmenopausal status: this knowledge could be useful in the determination of menopausal status in chemotherapy-treated patients.…”

“…[51][52][53][54] The age-related decrease in the number of follicles in the ovary is reflected in the number of antral follicles seen on ultrasound 55 ; in declining levels of AMH, 12 which is expressed only in small growing follicles 11 ; and in decreased levels of inhibin B, which is constitutively secreted from granulosa cells in FSH-dependent growing follicles. 56 Inhibin B plays an extremely important role as a gonadal feedback modulator of FSH secretion in early ovarian aging, with declining levels of inhibin B associated with increasing levels of FSH.…”
