Anti-Melanoma Capability of Contactless Cold Atmospheric Plasma Treatment

Abstract: In this study, we demonstrated that the widely used cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) jet could significantly inhibit the growth of melanoma cells using a contactless treatment method, The flow rate of helium gas was a key operational parameter to modulate electromagnetic (EM) effect on melanoma cells. Metal sheets with different sizes could be used as a strategy to control the strength of EM effect. More attractive, the EM effect from CAP could penetrate glass/polystyrene barriers as thick as 7 mm. All these disc… Show more

“…Physical factors, likely mainly the EM effect generated in CAP, have several novel features compared with chemical factors such as ROS and RNS in CAP. First, physical factors in CAP can penetrate the dielectric barrier (~1 mm) and air gap (~8 mm) to affect cells, which is consistent with the widely observed non-invasive nature of the transdermal capability of CAP treatment on the skin above tumor tissues [36,91]. Second, physical factors in CAP cause strong necrosis [36,41,127].…”

“…As shown in Figure 5 , physically based treatment can affect an area much larger than chemically based treatment because the EM effect can penetrate the dielectric physical barrier between every well on a 96-well plate [ 41 ]. In our recent study, an APPJ’s tip was less than 1 mm; however, the EM effect generated from APPJ could affect an area with a diameter of at least 2 cm [ 91 ]. As shown in Figure 4 a, the abscopal effect affects the tumor at a distance of 2–3 cm.…”

“…This difference in observed selectivity likely results from the chosen cell comparison. In the past, many studies have compared the sensitivity of cancer cells to CAP with their corresponding healthy cell type [25,33,46]. Although these comparisons provide helpful information, it is important to also consider how CAP influences the immune cell compartment in the tumor microenvironment, which can greatly influence therapy response and patient prognosis [26,27].…”

“…Lines, Ma-Mel-19 and UKRV-Mel-15a, in a Dose-Dependent Manner CAP has been previously shown to have potent inhibitory effects on melanoma cells, including the suppression of cell proliferation and the induction of cell death [33,34]. This study expanded on these results by using the human melanoma cell lines, Ma-Mel-19 and UKRV-Mel-15a, and by evaluating their response to direct CAP treatment by the MiniJet-R, an argon and microwave-based plasma jet.…”

“…The article by Dayun Yan et al entitled “Anti-Melanoma Capability of Contactless Cold Atmospheric Plasma Treatment” [ 9 ] demonstrates that a cold atmospheric helium plasma jet can prevent proliferation of melanoma cells under contactless treatment conditions. Dayun Yan et al found that the helium gas flow rate was an essential parameter for controlling the electromagnetic effect on melanoma cells.…”
