Anti-islanding detector based on a robust PLL

Abstract: International Standards impose to Distributed Energy Resources, connected to the grid by an inverter, to detect an islanding condition within a suitable time interval. In this paper a Phase Locked Loop (PLL), based on a third-order prediction-correction filter, is proposed to implement an islanding detector with reduced detection time. Such feature is obtained using the estimation of the grid angular frequency and acceleration provided by the PLL with a negligible time delay. The proposed approach is implement… Show more

“…The resulting parameter settings are T ωg = 30 ms; τ = 30 ms; T w = 5 ms (29) where the time constant of the frequency measurement setting T ωg is based on [22], and the transmission delay setting τ is from [23]. The action of the proposed controller was limited to the first two cycles to avoid an increasingly detrimental effect of the delays of Figure 8 in subsequent cycles.…”

“…In addition to the basic protections relating to the identification of network off-specifications or malfunctions, such as under voltage/over voltage detection algorithms, the recognition of islanding operation is essential, both when islanding is forbidden and when it is allowed. In the first case, fast disconnection action is required according to the imposed standards [24]. In the second case, the inverter has to switch as fast as possible to voltage mode control, in order to supply local islanded loads, and to separate the isle from the out-of-service grid.…”

“…The method is based on a PLL and the orthogonality between the rotor flux space vector and its back EMF vector. The idea of using PLL comes from control of grid-connected power converters where PLL is used for synchronization with the utility voltages [31][32][33]. Although the proposed method is derived from voltage model flux estimator, rotor flux is estimated without integrating the back EMF vector components in stationary reference frame.…”
