Anti-Inflammatory Mechanisms of Dietary Flavones: Tapping into Nature to Control Chronic Inflammation in Obesity and Cancer

Abstract: Flavones are natural phytochemicals broadly distributed in our diet. Their anti-inflammatory properties provide unique opportunities to control the innate immune system and inflammation. Here, we review the role of flavones in chronic inflammation with an emphasis on their impact on the molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory diseases including obesity and cancer. Flavones can influence the innate immune cell repertoire restoring the immune landscape. Flavones impinge on NF-κB, STAT, COX-2, or NLRP3 infla… Show more

“…Although we did not initially focus on inflammatory biomarkers such as ferritin in our study, in future research on the inflammation associated with NASH, we can consider measuring inflammatory biomarkers like ferritin in the serum of patients with NAFLD or NASH. Differences in various carbohydrate metabolisms also indicate changes in the fundamental metabolism between the two groups ( Sandoval et al, 2020 ; Kariagina and Doseff, 2022 ; Tan et al, 2022 ). This finding provides support for the hypothesis that NAFLD is fundamentally a metabolic disorder.…”

“…Natural flavones such as apigenin and nobiletin can regulate the expression of important inflammatory signaling pathways, including nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB). The antioxidant properties of several natural flavones are attributable to their ability to regulate the expression of Nrf2/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), which decreases free radical levels and oxidative stress [ 13 ]. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) can interact with the NF-κB signaling pathway to maintain cellular redox homeostasis during inflammatory states.…”

“…Flavones are typically present in food as glycosides. The absorption of orally delivered apigenin has been the subject of animal studies, particularly in rats [ 108 ]. Most of these studies show that apigenin aglycones and O-glycosides are absorbed quickly: the Tmax is generally ≤ 1 h, with a Cmax of 1–100 mmol/L, depending on the dose and the food matrix [ 109 ].…”
