Anti-inflammatory ergosterol derivatives from the endophytic fungus Fusarium chlamydosporum

Abstract: Two new ergosterol derivatives namely, chlamydosterols A [(22E,24R)-ergosta-7,22diene-3β,5α,6β-triol 6-decanoate] (1) and B [5α,6β,25-trihydroxy-(22E,24R)-ergosta-7,22dien-3-one] (5) and three known ergosterols: ergosta-7,22-dien-3-ol (2), ergosta-5,7,22triene-3-ol (3), and ergosta-7,22-diene-3,5α,6-triol (4) were separated from the EtOAc extract of the endophytic fungus Fusarium chlamydosporum isolated from Anvillea garcinii (Asteraceae) leaves growing in Saudi Arabia. Their structural assignment was acc… Show more

“…Ergosterol, a fungal sterol known to be pro‐vitamin D2, is abundant in mushrooms. This fungal sterol has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of various cancer cells tetradecanoylphorbol 13‐acetate (TPA)‐induced inflammation, and possess anti‐oxidant and anti‐obesity activities (Al‐Rabia et al., 2020; Liu et al., 2020; Noinart et al., 2017; Sun et al., 2019). L‐Ergothioneine, a stable anti‐oxidant amino acid, is a unique bioactive compound found in mushrooms.…”

“…Thus, specialized microorganisms could be used for biobased products from the sequestration of CO 2 , to ease climate change along with the production of value-added products [33] . Quite a number of microorganisms are well known for their capability to secrete bioactive molecules with therapeutic properties including, antimicrobials [34] , antitumor agents [35] , antiviral [36] , anti-glycemic [37] , antitubercular [38] , anti-plasmodial [39] , cytotoxic [40] , anti-inflammatory [41] and cholesterol-lowering agents [42] .…”

“…For decades, they have been seen as harmful, causing health hazards and spoiling foods. Today, the view on fungi has altered to take into account their advantageous effects, which have become apparent in biotechnological and industrial fields, as well as the production of structurally unique and life-saving metabolites [2][3][4][5]. In the past decades, the number of bioactive metabolites isolated from fungi has been rapidly increased due to their wide diversity of ecological and environmental niches across the globe, including marine, terrestrial, and water environments where they function as pathogens, symbionts, and saprobes [6,7].…”
