Anti-inflammatory effects of Flos Lonicerae Japonicae Water Extract are regulated by the STAT/NF-κB pathway and HO-1 expression in Virus-infected RAW264.7 cells

Abstract: This study examined the effect of the Flos Lonicerae Japonicae water extract (FLJWE), chlorogenic acid, and luteolin on pseudorabies virus (PRV)-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 cells and elucidated related molecular mechanisms. The results revealed that FLJWE and luteolin, but not chlorogenic acid, inhibited the production of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and inflammatory cytokines in PRV-infected RAW 264.7 cells. We found that the FLJWE and luteolin suppressed nuclear fact… Show more

“…In brain tissues, glial cells as well as neurons express iNOS. Studies reported iNOS up-regulation in inflammatory and infiltrating macrophages, following brain infection by alphaherpes PRV [ 5 , 11 , 12 ] or HSV type 1 [ 13 ]. In addition, COX-2, a major mediator of prostaglandin biosynthesis, was reported to be markedly induced following the herpesvirus (e.g., human cytomegalovirus, HSV and PRV) infection of fibroblasts [ 5 , 13 ].…”

“…Previous studies have revealed that honeysuckle could inhibit various inflammatory factors exerting strong effect against bacteria induced inflammatory mediators ( Shang et al, 2011 ; Kao et al, 2015 ). Lin et al (2021) found that honeysuckle water extract could reduce the expression of proinflammatory mediators through NF-κB pathway. Ryu and colleague found that the active ingredients from honeysuckle exerted anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects by inhibition of COX-2 induction and activity of iNOS ( Ryu et al, 2010 ).…”

“…Chlorogenic acid and luteolin are used as quality control standards for the characterization of medical materials ( Yuan et al, 2014 ). LJF extract suppressed inflammation by downregulating the expression of inflammatory cytokines ( Lin H. W. et al, 2021 ; Liu C. et al, 2021 ). Meanwhile, the central nervous system coordinately regulates inflammation and sleep ( Irwin and Opp, 2017 ).…”
