Anti‐Inflammatory Effects of Fermented Bark of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus and Its Isolated Compounds on Lipopolysaccharide‐Treated RAW 264.7 Macrophage Cells

Abstract: The fermentation was carried out on the bark of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus (AS). Acanthopanax species have been used in traditional medicine as tonics, sedatives, and antispasmodics. An activity-guided isolation of the fermented bark of A. sessiliflorus (FAS) yielded several phytochemicals: acanthoside D (1), acanthoside B (2), daucosterol (3), protocatechuic acid (4), chlorogenic acid methyl ester (5), ciwujiatone (6), syringaresinol (7), farnesol (8), 3,4-dicaffeoylquinic acid (9), and falcarindiol (10). “…Seven plant species showed high inhibitory activity on NO production, namely Commelina communis, Elaeagnus umbellata, Eleutherococcus sessiliflorus, P. orientalis, Pinus densiflora, Zanthoxylum schinifolium, and Sophora flavescens , as determined by the 3- (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The results are in line with those of previous studies wherein plant species were revealed to have anti-inflammatory effects [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 ]. The antioxidant activity of 50 samples ( Figure S2 ) is presented as the standard of Trolox equivalent antioxidant activity.…”

“…The NMR spectra of compounds 1 and 2 indicated phenolic acids [protocatechuic acid (1) and caffeic acid (2)], and their spectral data were compared with those of previous studies [20][21][22][23]. Signals of the ABX splitting type in the aromatic ring were observed in both compounds.…”

“…Kim showed that the fermented extract of Schisandra chinensis had strong anti-inflammatory activity, and contained acanthoside B. 24 The specific performance was the reduction of nitric oxide (NO) production, inhibition of iNOS, and COX-2, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-2). At the same time, another study showed that neohesperidin antagonized TGF-β1/ Smad3 signaling and played a role in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.…”
