Anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects of an essential oils-based bioadhesive gel after oral mucosa biopsies: preliminary results

Abstract: Post-operative management of patients receiving oral biopsy includes the control of edema, pain, infection, and re-epithelization at the surgical site. This clinical study investigates the topical use of a bioadhesive gel, containing essential oils, to promote wound healing and prevent post-operative pain and infection, avoiding the need for surgical suture and chlorhexidine applications. Ten patients, who needed to receive oral biopsies (≤6 mm in diameter) for the diagnosis of mucosal oral lesions, were enrol… Show more

“…EOs are isolated by steam/hydro-distillation or by cold expression [ 15 ]. They are known to have multiple biological activities, such as antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, wound healing, anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory properties [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Given the wide spread of bacterial resistance, disrupting the QS mechanism seems to be an interesting alternative.…”

“…An EO preparation administered for the treatment of vulvovaginitis, such as tea tree and geranium oil reaches the target site in a direct way and can reduce and eliminate infectious causes and inflammation ( Blackwell, 1991 ; Maruyama et al, 2008 ). Oral infections, postoperative wounds or bad breath caused by bacteria, as well as xerostomia can be treated with appropriate EOs in e.g., mouthwashes ( Fischman et al, 2004 ; Alshehri, 2018 ; Scotti et al, 2018 ; Filipović et al, 2020 ). Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr.…”

“…In recent years, numerous studies had been conducted to identify compounds that can be used as an adjunct to the current approach to managing oral biofilm, especially for patients sensitive to CHX. One of the compounds is essential oil due to its effective therapeutic activity against pathogenic biofilms (Wang et al, 2016;Scotti et al, 2018). The sweet basil leaves essential oil (SBEO) used in this study has shown antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and analgesic properties (Beier et al, 2014;Jin et al, 2020).…”
