Anti-inflammatory and Immunomodulatory Effects of Ulomoides dermestoides on Induced Pleurisy in Rats and Lymphoproliferation In Vitro

Abstract: The following study aimed to evaluate, in vitro and in vivo, the anti-inflammatory effect of Ulomoides dermestoides, a beetle commonly used as a remedy for a variety of diseases including respiratory disorders and asthma. We used an acute inflammation model of injury, injection of carrageenan into the pleural cavity of rats. The rats were treated intraperitoneally with the aqueous extract of U. dermestoides 8 and 16 mg/kg. The exudate volume, protein concentration, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and total… Show more

“…Carrageenan-induced pleurisy is a well characterized experimental model of inflammation that permits the quantification and correlation of both exudate and cellular migration with changes of other inflammatory parameters (Santos et al 2010). This model has been widely used to investigate the pathophysiology of acute inflammation and also to evaluate the efficacy of drugs in inflammation (Paul et al 2009).…”

“…Often, the inflammatory response to severe lesions erroneously damages normal tissue [20]. Carrageenaninduced pleurisy, a well-established inflammation model, is commonly used to investigate pathophysiology of acute inflammation, which allowed quantification and correlation of both exudate and cellular migration with changes of other inflammatory parameters [21]. Recruitment of cells to inflammatory sites is dependent on the release of vasoactive and chemotactic factors that increase regional blood flow and microvascular permeability and promote the migration of leukocytes from the intravascular space into the tissues [22].…”

“…The cells were treated with either isolated NAC concentrations (1 mM; 5 mM; 10 mM; 15 mM) or associated with FBP (1.25 mM) (n = 6 for each concentration). The cellular viability was performed by Trypan Blue dye exclusion after 96 hours of incubation (26,32) . The results are presented as percentage ± SEM.…”
