Anti‐Inflammatory and Antinociceptive Activities of Untreated, Germinated, and Fermented Mung Bean Aqueous Extract

Abstract: Evaluation of anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities of untreated mung bean (MB), germinated mung bean (GMB), and fermented mung bean (FMB) was performed on both in vitro (inhibition of inflammatory mediator, nitric oxide(NO)) and in vivo (inhibition of ear oedema and reduction of response to pain stimulus) studies. Results showed that both GMB and FMB aqueous extract exhibited potent anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities in a dose-dependent manner. In vitro results showed that GMB and FMB… Show more

“…Inflammation is a defence mechanism by host against infections, foreign substances and tissue injury by activation of the cellular immune responses that stimulates various cytokines and nitric oxide which are known as pro-inflammatory mediators [2]. Excessive production of inflammatory mediators could, however, result in a chronic disease condition such as autoimmune disease and rheumatoid arthritis with features of redness, swelling, pain transmitted by peripheral or central nerves [3].…”

“…A number of mediators such as eicosanoids, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β and interleukin-6 have been implicated in the pathogenesis of these inflammatory disorders which provides a plethora of targets for anti-inflammatory molecules [2]. Many drugs have been developed for the treatment of nociception and inflammation.…”

“…The main ingredient is tannin acid. In vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated its pharmacological effects, including spermicidal, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities [ 8 , 9 ]. However, there are no reports about the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities.…”

“…A recent finding has suggested that antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties of mung bean coats can be greatly increased once fermented with fungi (Huang et al., ; Ali et al., ). Consequently, this process indicates the potential of the product of fermented mung bean seed coats (FMSC) in formulating diets for post‐weaned pigs as an antioxidant supplement.…”
