Abstract:We investigated the anti-caries effects of an experimental propolis varnish in vivo, and further tested its toxicity against fibroblasts. Fifty-six SPF female Wistar rats were infected with Streptococcus mutans UA159 (SM) and allocated into four groups (n = 14/group): G1, propolis varnish (15%/PV); G2, chitosan varnish (CV/vehicle); G3, gold standard (GS/Duraphat ® ); and G4, untreated. The animals received a single varnish application on their molars and were submitted to a high cariogenic challenge (Diet-2000, 56% sucrose, and 5% sucrose-added water, ad libitum) for 4 weeks. Total cultivable microbiota and SM were counted, and smooth-surface and sulcal caries were scored. PV, CV and GS cytotoxic effects were tested against fibroblasts. The data were analyzed using ANOVA with the TukeyKramer test (p ≤ 0.05). Total microbiota and SM counts did not differ among the treatments (p = 0.78), or in relation to the untreated group (p = 0.52). PV reduced development of smooth-surface enamel caries compared with the untreated group (p = 0.0018), with no significant difference from GS (p = 0.92); however, the PV effects were no longer observed when the dentin was affected. Neither PV nor GS prevented enamel sulcal lesion onset, but GS significantly reduced the severity of dentinal sulcal lesions (p < 0.0001). No significant difference was observed in fibroblast viability between PV and GS (p < 0.0001).In conclusion, PV prevented smooth-surface enamel caries and showed low cell toxicity. Nevertheless, due to the high cariogenic challenge, its effects were not sustained throughout the experiment. Further studies are encouraged to establish a protocol to sustain the long-term anticaries activity of PV in the oral cavity.

RESUMORealizou-se uma prospecção tecnológica para avaliar o uso de própolis no desenvolvimento de resinas dentárias. Patentes e artigos científicos foram buscados nas bases WIPO, LATIPAT, Science Direct, e Scopus, respectivamente. Foram recuperadas 133 patentes na base LATIPAT quando utilizado o termo "propolis" no campo "pesquisa inteligente". Dessas, 110 (82,71%) foram depositadas no Brasil e 59 (54%) pertencem à classificação A61K. A busca na base Patentscope, utilizando o termo "propolis" no campo "página de cobertura" e a opção de organismo PCT, gerou a recuperação de 114 documentos, onde 74 desses (65%) pertencem à classificação A61K. Dentre as 133 patentes recuperadas pertencentes à classificação A61K, somente 10 são relacionadas ao desenvolvimento de produtos odontológicos à base de própolis e nenhuma se refere a resinas dentárias compostas, indicando o ineditismo do tema proposto em se tratando de patentes depositadas no Brasil e via PCT.Palavras chave: Própolis. USE OF PROPOLIS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DENTAL RESINS: A PROSPECTIVE STUDY ABSTRACTA technological prospection was carried out to evaluate the use of propolis in the development of dental resins. Patents and scientific articles were searched at the bases WIPO, LATIPAT, Science Direct, and Scopus, respectively. 133 patents were recovered at the LATIPAT database when the term "propolis" was used in the "smart search" field. Of these, 110 (82.71%) were deposited in Brazil and 59 (54%) belong to the A61K classification. The search in the Patentscope database, using the term "propolis" in the "cover page" field and the PCT organism option, generated the retrieval of 114 documents, where 74 of these (65%) belong to the A61K classification. Among the 133 recovered patents belonging to the A61K classification, only 10 are related to the development of propolis-based dental products and none refers to composite dental resins, indicating the novelty of the proposed theme for patents deposited in Brazil and via PCT.
