Anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effect of zingiberene on isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in experimental animals

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the antihyperlipidemic and anti-inflammatory effect of zingiberene (ZBN) on isoproterenol-(ISO) induced myocardial infarction in rats. ZBN (10 mg/kg b.wt.) was orally administered to rats for 21 days and ISO (85 mg/kg b.wt.) was subcutaneously injected into the rats at 24 h intervals for the last 2 consecutive days. We observed increased serum creatine kinase, creatine kinase-MB, cardiac troponin T, and I levels in ISO-treated MI rats. Conversely, ZBN oral administration signifi… Show more

“…For specimen B, the oxygenated sesquiterpene spathulenol had the highest concentration (40.70%), followed by the hydrocarbon sesquiterpenes α-zingiberene (9.58%) and γ-elemene (6.89%), which is significantly different from the findings previously reported in the literature [44]. Spathulenol has been reported to harbor insecticidal, insect repellent, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and antimycobacterial properties [45][46][47][48], while α-zingiberene is a known inhibitor for aflatoxin and fungal mycotoxins as well as having antihyperlipidemic and anti-inflammatory properties [49,50].…”

“…The increased cytokine levels may be reflected in the brain as neuroinflammation. Several studies support the release of proinflammatory cytokines shortly after ISO treatment (Alemasi et al, 2019;Li et al, 2021;Al-Botaty et al, 2022). Moreover, the cytokines that appeared increased in plasma after ISO, TNFα, IL6, and IL1β (Li et al, 2021), are also the ones shared between depression and heart failure (Pasic et al, 2003).…”

Moreover, the cytokines that appeared increased in plasma after ISO, TNFα, IL6, and IL1β (Li et al, 2021), are also the ones shared between depression and heart failure (Pasic et al, 2003). Specifically, TNFα may play a role in leakage of the blood brain barrier (Liu et al, 2013;Al-Botaty et al, 2022).…”

“…13,14 Zingiberene, which is the second largest amount of essential oil contained in ginger extract, contributes to various pharmacological effects, namely as an anti-hyperlipidemia and anti-inflammatory agent. 15 Linalool and borneol, which are the third and fourth largest amounts of essential oil in ginger extract, contribute to sleep regulation. 16,17 Based on the results of the research above, it can be seen that there are very significant differences in the content of linalool, borneol, zingiberene, and zingerone between red and white ginger.…”
