Objective. Oxidative stress leads to numerous physiological disorders including infectious diseases, inflammation, and cancer. The present study was carried out to investigate antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activity of methanol crude extract of leaves and fruits of the Ficus racemosa (LCME and FCME, resp.) and to analyse its major bioactive polyphenols by HPLC-DAD. Methods. Antioxidant capacity of the extracts was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging, reducing power, total phenolic, total flavonoid, total tannin content assay, superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. Identification and quantification of bioactive polyphenols were done by HPLC-DAD method. Antibacterial activity was tested by “disc diffusion” method. Brine shrimp lethality assay was carried out to check the cytotoxic potential. Result. Both LCME and FCME showed DPPH scavenging ability and concentration dependent reducing power activity. They had phenolic content, flavonoid content, and tannin content. Both the extracts showed superoxide radical scavenging ability, hydroxyl radical scavenging ability, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging ability. HPLC analysis of LCME and FCME indicated the presence of significant amount of gallic acid along with other phenolic constituents. Conclusion. Significant amount of gallic acid along with other phenolic constituents might have played an important role in the observed antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activity.

Major objective of this study was to appraise the variation of antioxidant activity, total phenols, total flavonoids and individual phenolic acids among fruit peels from five species of Citrus namely C. sinensis 'Valancia' (Mausami), C. sinensis 'Maltaise Sanguine' (Red blood), C. reticulata (Kinnow), C. reticulata Blanco 'Merisol' (Fruiter), and C. paradisi 'Macfadyen' (Grapefruit) as function of extraction solvents. The extract yield from the fruit peels of the selected Citrus species by using four solvents varied significantly (p<0.05) 17.56-49.13 g/100g in relation to the extraction media and type of peel. The highest extraction yield was obtained with 100% methanol from Red blood (C. sinensis 'Maltaise Sanguine') peel while the least with 100% ethanol from Fruiter (C. reticulata Blanco 'Merisol') peel. The total phenolic contents (TPC), total flavonoid contents (TFC), DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC 50 ) and reducing power [FRAP (EC 50 )] for peel extracts ranged from 13.69 to 66.10 GAE mg/g of dry weight (DW), 9.34 to 28.99 CE mg/g DW, 0.33 to 2.32 mg/mL and 2.05 to 6.76 mg/mL, respectively. According to HPLC analysis of peel extracts, gallic acid and protocatechuic acid with contribution 11.96-96.08 and 109.18-578.59mg/kg of extract, respectively, were detected to be the main phenolic acids among others. Total amount of individual phenolic acids (TPAs) in the tested peels varied over 18.37 to 1015.99 mg/kg of extract. The highest amount of TPAs was extracted in Red blood (C. sinensis 'Maltaise Sanguine') with 80% methanol while the least in Grapefruit (C. paradisi 'Macfadyen') with 100% methanol. It can be concluded from the present data that both the species and extraction solvents have notable effect on the antioxidant attributes and phenolics of citrus peels. Overall, the results of this study showed that extracts from peel of Red blood (C. sinensis 'Maltaise Sanguine'), among others, possessed superior antioxidant activity and greater amount of phenolic acids.

The search for new therapeutic remedies from natural sources is a continuous process. Momordica charantia under the family Cucurbitaceous is commonly known as tita korola in Bangladesh. Traditionally, it is used to treat many diseases, including diabetes and obesity, infections, cough, respiratory diseases, wounds and skin diseases, ulcer, gout and rheumatism, spasm, and cancer. This study aimed at the evalualtion of toxicity, anti-inflammatory, membrane stabilizing and thrombolytic activity of M. charantia aqueous leaf extract by applying a number of in vitro and ex vivo test systems. For this, toxicity analysis was done in Allium cepa, while anti-inflammatory, and membrane stabilizing and clotlysis capacity were tested by using egg albumin and human erythrocytes, respectively. Additionally, preliminary phytochemical analysis was also done. The results suggest that the crude aqueous crude extract of M. charantia possesses alkaloid, flavonoid, terpinoid, saponins, glycoside, tannins, and reducing sugars. The crude extract exhibited toxicity in A. cepa in a concentration and time-dependent manner. No adaptation capacity of DNA damage was seen during the exposure time (24-72 h). The extract at 0.03-0.14% (v/v) significantly (p <0.05, p <0.01, p <0.001) inhibited protein denaturation, membrane lysis and clot lysis capacity in a concentration-dependent manner. Of note, the extract exerted toxic effects at high concentrations, while protective effects against toxic and cytotoxic effects at low concentrations. M. charantia may be one of the potential sources of phytotherapeutic agents for various diseases, including oxidative stress, inflammatory diseases and cancer.
