Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Methanolic Leaf Extract of Kigelia Africana (Lam.) Benth and Stem Bark Extract of Acacia Hockii De Wild in Mice

Abstract: Inflammation causes discomfort, suffering and lower productivity of the victims. Synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs are not readily available and have adverse side effects. Alternative herbal medicines possess bioactive compounds that are safer and efficient in the management of various diseases and disorders. The present study evaluated for the anti-inflammatory activity of methanolic extracts of Kigelia africana and Acacia hockii in mice to scientifically validate their traditional use among the Embu and Mbee… Show more

“…The 200 mg / kg and 400 mg / kg dose of Kigelia pinnata leaf extract has a significant reduction in carrageenine-induced leg edema (P <0.001) in a dosedependent manner [24] . Kamau JK et al, 2016 [25] studied the anti-inflammatory activity of the methanol extracts of Kigelia Africana using the carragen-induced posterior leg edema method with the reference drug diclofenac. The extract of the K. africana leaf reduced the diameter of the inflamed hind paw of the mice by 0.21% -4.98%.…”

“…The ethanolic extract of A. nilotica bark is rich in phenolics (catechin, gallic acid, tannic acid, iso-quercetin, rutin, hydroquinine, eriodictyol) and flavonoids (naringenin, apigenin, kaempferol, quercetin) (Ali et al , 2021; Salem et al , 2011; Sadiq et al , 2015). It was observed as a potential source of phenolic acids called tannins and contain around 16% of total phenols (Ali et al , 2012; Khare, 2007; Sadiq et al , 2015). The flowers of A. dealbata hold more than 25% phenolic content along with an antiradical activity of 85% of Trolox (Casas et al , 2020).…”
