Numerous plant isolates with therapeutic properties, such as antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antiviral, antimalarial, antiarthritic (AA), hepatoprotective, cardiotonic, and so forth, are reported in the literature. Usually, medicinal plants are widely used, and assumed to be safe and cheaper alternatives to chemically synthesized drugs. However, they are not regulated for potency and purity, and thus care must be taken for their safe use. In this review, we aimed to compile all of the herbal isolates possessing AA properties, including alkaloids (montanine, 3-acetylaconitine, sanguinarine, jatrorrhizine hydrochloride, and piperine), terpenoids (eugenol, nimbolide, bartogenic acid, cannabidiol, and curcumin), and flavonoids (quercetin, resveratrol, kaempferol, chebulanin, ellagic acid, rosmarinic acid, gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, and brazilin). These isolates act through numerous pharmacological mechanisms such as inhibiting cytokines, chemokines, or matrix metalloproteinase, etc., to demonstrate AA activity. Animal models utilized for assessing the AA properties of these isolates, including adjuvant-induced arthritis mouse models, are also discussed. Furthermore, nanotechnology-based approaches to deliver these isolates are also reviewed, which have shown improved therapeutic efficacy of isolated compounds.

Since the beginning of human civilization, medicinal plants have been used by mankind for its therapeutic value. Madhuca longifolia (Family: Sapotaceae), is an Indian tropical tree found largely in the central and north Indian plains and forests. Its common or trade name is Mahwa or Mahua. Various parts of Madhuca longifolia has been used traditionally for different ethnomedicinal purposes. This review enlists the contributions of various scientists on Madhuca longifolia under different sections like ethnomedicinal activity, pharmacological activity, toxicological activity, phytochemistry, insecticidal & pesticidal activity, antimicrobial activity, ethnobotany, clinical studies, miscellaneous, pharmacognosy, analytical and processing techniques, biochemistry and agronomy. This review will provide a path to the researchers to explore the therapeutic potentials of Madhuca lngifolia.

Diclofenac is used to treat rheumatism disorders, which are associated with the damages of renal, gastric and hepatic organs. Diclofenac is a pharmaceutical drug that is known to induce toxicity on its overdosage and long-term usage. Madhuca longifolia is known to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer activity. It is an evergreen tree that is reported to have many ethnomedicinal uses. The other properties of Madhuca longifolia include anti-diabetic, analgesic and anti-microbial activities. Our study aims to evaluate the pre-treatment activity against the diclofenac-induced toxicity by the Madhuca longifolia aqueous leaf extract in Wistar albino rats for 10 and 15 days. Rats were divided as Group-I: Normal control, Group-II: Diclofenac on the last two days, Group-III and group-IIIa: Diclofenac + Aqueous Leaf Extract of Madhuca longifolia, Group-IV and group-IVb: Diclofenac + Silymarin, Group -V and group-Va: Aqueous Madhuca longifolia leaf extract. After the sacrifice, the rats were studied for antioxidant assay, renal enzyme markers, liver enzyme markers, and histopathological analysis of the kidney, stomach, intestine, and liver. As a result, we could identify that Madhuca longifolia has reduced the toxic changes in rats caused by diclofenac.
