Anti-Inflammatory Activity ofDelonix regia(Boj. Ex. Hook)

Abstract: The present work was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of Delonix regia leaves (Family: Caesalpiniaceae). The powder of Delonix regia leaves was subjected to extraction with ethanol in soxhlet extractor. The ethanol extract after preliminary phytochemical investigation showed the presence of sterols, triterpenoids, phenolic compounds and flavonoids. The anti-inflammatory activity was studied using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and cotton pellet granuloma at a three different doses (100, 200, and 4… Show more

“…The carrageenan-induced paw oedema test is a well-researched and highly reproducible model, and is therefore frequently chosen for evaluating the acute anti-inflammatory actions of natural products [15,28,29,37]. In general, the development of oedema in the rat hind paw following injection of carrageenan has been described as a biphasic event [5,28,[38][39][40], in which various mediators operate in sequence to produce this inflammatory response [28]. In this model, MEOC showed a significant inhibitory effect of carrageenan-induced oedema, showing them more effective during the first determinations.…”

“…The first phase begins immediately after injection of carrageenan and diminishes within 1 h and the second phase begins at the end of first phase and persisted for at least 5 h after treatment (Holsapple et al, 1980). In initial phase, inflammatory reactions following the injection of carrageenan seem to be mediated by several agents, e.g., histamine, serotonin, kinins and these mediators are probably mainly restricted to the first phases of the process (Garcia Leme et al, 1973), whereas kinin-like substances, arachidonate metabolites as prostaglandins which are the principal mediators of inflammation, leukotrienes, protease and lysosome are mostly released in the second phase (Olajide et al, 1999;Vite et al, 2011;Shewale et al, 2012). No doses of the methanol extracts of flower buds and fruits showed significant anti-inflammatory effect at 90 min as diclofenac, well known cyclooxygenase inhibitor, and significant edema inhibitory response started at 180 min or after following carrageenan injection as diclofenac.…”
