Geranium oil has been used traditionally for diarrhea, dermatitis, and intestinal inflammation in East Asia. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of geranium oil's characteristic components, citronellol and geraniol, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. Citronellol and geraniol suppressed NO and PGE(2) production in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibitory efficacy of geraniol was concomitant with decreases in protein and mRNA expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), whereas citronellol inhibited only iNOS enzymatic activity. By adding citronellol and geraniol, the LPS-induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein and mRNA expression levels were significantly attenuated, whereas cytosolic degradation of I κB α and upregulation of NF-κB p65 in the nucleus were reversed. These results suggested that citronellol and geraniol exhibit anti-inflammatory activities, supporting their common use and demonstrating their therapeutic potential for inflammation-associated disorders.

Summary A glycoprotein with a molecular weight of ∼10 kDa was purified from Saccharina japonica, and its antioxidant activity was evaluated using five different antioxidant assays. The highest antioxidant activities of the purified glycoprotein determined by DPPH, ABTS, SODA, SORS and FRAP assays were 85%, 95%, 94%, 72% and 97%, respectively. About 37% nitric oxide scavenging and 85% xanthine oxidase inhibition activities were also observed at a concentration of 5 mg mL−1. The glycoprotein exhibited optimal activity levels of free radical scavenging at pH 7–9 and 40 °C. Antioxidant activity decreased when treated with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and metal ions. Moreover, its scavenging activity decreased when the glycoprotein was treated with deactivation agents such as pronase E or sodium periodate (NaIO4), and it showed protective activity against DNA cleavage induced under oxidative conditions.

Резюме: в огляді літератури узагальнено дані про ботанічну характеристику, розповсюдження, хімічний склад і застосування герані сибірської.Ключові слова: герань сибірська, Geranium sibiricum L., ботанічна характеристика, хімічний склад, застосування.Вступ. Наукова і практична медицина поряд із ви-користанням новітніх фармацевтичних препаратів дедалі частіше звертається до цілющих властивос-тей лікарських рослин, знаходячи несподівані й ба-жані відповіді у лікуванні та профілактиці різних за-хворювань. До таких рослин можна віднести рід Ге-рань (Geranium L.), який нараховує понад 300 видів. На території України широко розповсюдженні більше 20 видів гераней [1, 2].Мета роботи -систематизація результатів ботаніч-ного, фітохімічного і фармакологічного вивчення рос-лини герані сибірської.Ботанічна характеристика і поширення. Герань сибірська (Geranium sibiricum L.) − дворіч-на або багаторічна трав'яниста рослина, заввишки 20-60 см. Стебло висхідне або прямостояче, зде-більшого слабке, практично від основи і вище багато-разово розгалужене, вкрите притиснутими простими, незалозистими волосками. Листки у герані невели-кі, діаметром 1,5-5 см. Пластинки листків розсічені на 3-5 ромбічних часток, які у верхній половині не-правильно гостро або тупувато-перистонадрізані. Прикореневі листки 5-7-лопатеві, рано відмирають, стеблові супротивні на довгих, до 8 см завдовжки, черешках. Прилистки до 8 мм завдовжки, ланцетні, довгозагостренні, шкірясті. Квітконоси рослини одно-квіткові, дуже рідко несуть по дві квітки. Вони вихо-дять поодинці із пазух стеблових листків. Квітконіж-ки тонкі, після цвітіння відігнуті вниз, а на верхівці висхідні. Чашолистики 5-6 мм завдовжки, по жилах негусто вкриті волосками нерівної довжини, між жил-ками зазвичай шорсткі. Пелюстки 4-7 мм завдовжки та 2-3 мм завширшки, оберненояйцеподібні, цілісні або трохи виїмчасті, по краях війчасті, при основі з нечисленними короткими і тонкими волосками або голі, білі або блідо-рожеві. Нитки тичинок довгасто-яйцеподібно розширені до основи, по краях з дуже короткими і нерівними за довжиною волосками, дуже рідко голі. Плоди овальні завдовжки до 2 см, покри-ті довгими жорсткими волосками; насіння найтонше, лінійно-точкове. Цвіте герань сибірська в червні-лип-ні, а плодоносить у липні-вересні [1][2][3][4].
