Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Crude Saponin Extracts from Five Nigerian Medicinal Plants

Abstract: AbstactCrude saponin extracts of five medicinal plants used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, gout and haemorrhoids were screened for anti-inflammatory activity using carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema test. These plants were the whole plant of Schwenkia americana Linn (WSA), the rhizomes of Asparagus africanus Lam (RAA), the leaves of Dichrostachys cinerea Linn (LDC), the stem bark of Ficus iteophylla Miq (BFI) and the leaves of Indigofera pulchra Willd (LIP). “…Pain is frequently associated with inflammation (White et al, 2005;Cunha et al, 2008). Steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the most commonly used to treat inflammation (Hassan et al, 2012), but both are prone to presenting with serious adverse reactions (Dharmasiri et al, 2003;Park et al, 2004). Therefore, the search for new and cost effective anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents with little or no side effects for mankind is necessary.…”
