Background: Steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are most commonly used to treat inflammation, and shown to have severe side effects. In this study, we aimed at evaluating the anti-inflammatory and acute toxicity effects of Baccharoides schimperi (DC.) in order to get new anti-inflammatory agents of natural origin. Materials and methods: The aerial part of the plant was dried under shade, ground and extracted with 96% alcohol (BSE). It was further fractionated in sequence to n-hexane (BSH), chloroform (BSC) and methanol (BSM) soluble fractions. Acute toxicity was evaluated by oral administration of plant and hind paw induced-edema method in rats was used for the anti-inflammatory evaluation. Results: The BSE was found safe up to the dose level of 3 g/kg b.w. and showed LD 50 value 7.250 g/kg body weight (b.w.) in mice. BSE showed significant anti-inflammatory effect (62.91%) at 500 mg/kg b.w. Further the n-hexane, chloroform and methanol fractions of BSE were tested for antiinflammatory activity. The n-hexane fraction (BSH) exhibits significant activity (64.87%) at 400 mg/kg b.w. The methanol fraction (BSM) showed dose dependent activity, highest activity (60.42%) was observed at higher dose 400 of mg/kg b.w. In chloroform fraction (BSC) no significant activity was observed. Conclusion:The results of the study revealed that the plant is safe to the experimental model and recommended as a potential source of antiinflammatory agent.

Background: Albuca bracteata is a medicinal plant traditionally used in the management of diabetes mellitus in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of saponins extracted from the bulb of Albuca bracteata and compared with the crude methanolic extract. Methods: In vitro antioxidant activity was determined using free radical scavenging assays such as DPPH, ABTS and NO 2 . The antiinflammatory potential was carried out using inhibition of protein denaturation of egg albumin as a model of anti-inflammatory capacity. Results: Both the crude methanolic extract and saponins showed inhibition of DPPH, ABTS and NO 2 scavenging activity. However, the free radical scavenging activity of isolated saponin compared favourably with Rutin and BHT. The crude methanolic extract showed higher inhibition percentage of protein denaturation compared with the saponins at the concentration investigated. Conclusion: This study indicates that saponin from Albuca bracteata bulb possess potent anti-inflammatory activity and is also a good source of natural antioxidant.

An herbal formulation composed of Allium cepa (Onion), Zingiber officinale (Ginger), Allium sativum (Garlic), Aloe vera, Andrographis paniculata (King of bitters), Allium ascalonicum (Shallot), reportedly used as anti-inflammatory agent was investigated. This study evaluated the physicochemical, phytochemical properties and in vivo anti-inflammatory effect of the herbal formulation. The herbal formulation (Hp-01) was subjected to physicochemical analysis; visual and organoleptic test, thin layer chromatography (TLC), pH, trace elements, phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity using DPPH inhibition and total phenolic acid (TPA) content determination. The biological effect at three doses (half, normal and double) on acute inflammation using carrageenan-induced paw oedema, weight, haematological parameters and liver functions were investigated in Wistar rats. The herbal formulation (Hp-01) was an acidic (pH 3.18), bitter preparation with pungent odour and sediments. The TLC analysis showed a maximum of three spots. Trace elements content of Pb, Cd, Fe, and Zn were within acceptable limits at 0.053, 0.003, 1.190 and 4.190 mg/l respectively. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of anthraquinones, tannins, terpenoids, saponins (2.12%w/w), alkaloids (2.45%w/w) and flavonoids (49.45%w/w). The IC 50 for DPPH radical scavenging activity was 2646.82±58.24 µg/ml indicating low activity, while TPA content was 0.0184±0.0005 mgGAE/g. The antiinflammatory activity of the herbal formulation was comparable acetylsalicylic acid (reference) at the three doses tested (p>0.05). Also, there was no significant effect on the weight, liver function, some haematological parameters; PCV, RBC, Hb. The herbal formulation has comparable anti-inflammatory activity with acetylsalicylic acid and may be explored for new anti-inflammatory agents.
