The bioactive compound 5-hydroxy-7-methoxy-2-phenylchroman-4-one (pinostrobin, I), was isolated from aerial parts of Nolana ramossisima I.M. Johnst., a Chilean endemic species, using a combination of medium pressure column chromatography and high speed countercurrent liquid-liquid chromatography (HSCCC). The compound crystallized as a non-centrosymmetric polymorph in the orthorhombic chiral space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 . Its structure had been previously reported by Shoja (Acta Cryst. C45, 828, 1989) and Yamovoi et al. (Khim. Prir. Soedin (5), 361, 2001) in the centrosymmetric space groups Pbca and P21/c, respectively.

Anti‐Inflammatory Constituents from the Branches of Pourthiaea villosa (Thunb.) Decne

In this study, the extract from Pourthiaea villosa Decne branches was investigated and their anti‐inflammatory constituents were identified. The prepared ethanol extract was fractionated successively to afford n‐hexane, ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n‐butanol, and aqueous layers. In the examination of the anti‐inflammatory activities, EtOAc layer was observed to have good nitric oxide production inhibitory property in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Phytochemical studies for EtOAc layer led to isolation of eight constituents such as ursolic acid (1), arjunolic acid (2), daucosterol (3), myricanol (4), gallic acid (5), myricetin (6), myricitrin (7), and quercitrin (8). The isolate 4 efficiently inhibited nitric oxide production in a dose‐dependent manner in LPS‐induced RAW 264.7 cells. The production of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) enzyme protein was decreased by compound 4, which showed that the observed NO inhibition could be interconnected to down‐expression of iNOS protein. In addition, compound 4 reduced the production of TNF‐α, IL‐1β, and IL‐6 in a concentration‐dependent manner. This study demonstrated that the P. villosa extract containing myricanol (4) could be considered potential anti‐inflammatory agents in pharmaceutical or cosmetic industries.

Plant growth inhibitors in turmeric (Curcuma longa) and their effects on Bidens pilosa

Turmeric (Curcuma spp.) has numerous biological activities, including anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and insecticidal properties. Here, we evaluated the plant growth-inhibitory activities of two cultivars of Curcuma longa (C. longa; Ryudai gold and Okinawa ukon) against radish, cress, lettuce and Bidens pilosa (B. pilosa). The methanol extracts of both turmeric varieties inhibited the seed germination and seedling growth of all the tested plants. Ryudai gold had a significantly higher inhibitory effect on the seed germination and root and shoot growth of the plants than Okinawa ukon. Therefore, Ryudai gold was chosen for the isolation of plant growth-inhibitory compounds using a silica gel column and high-performance liquid chromatography. The structural identification of the compounds was carried out using 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The growth inhibitors were identified as four curcuminoids; dihydrobisdemethoxycurcumin (1), bisdemethoxycurcumin (2), demethoxycurcumin (3) and curcumin (4). The IC 50 of the curcuminoids against the root and shoot growth of B. pilosa ranged from 8.7 AE 1.7 to 12.9 AE 1.8 and from 15.5 AE 1.8 to 38.9 AE 2.8 μmol L −1 , respectively. Compound 1 showed the lowest IC 50 against the root and shoot growth of B. pilosa. These results suggested that Ryudai gold has a potential growth-inhibitory effect against B. pilosa. *P < 0.05 versus Okinawa ukon. Results are expressed as the mean AE standard error of three independent experiments in triplicate.
