Anti-inflammatory activities of puerarin in high-fat diet-fed rats with streptozotocin-induced gestational diabetes mellitus

Abstract: To investigate the effect of puerarin on insulin resistance and inflammation in rats with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Gestational diabetic model rats were established by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (25 mg/kg) combined with high-fat feeding and were randomly assigned to three groups: the control group, the GDM group, and the puerarin-treated group. Puerarin was intragastrically administered to rats daily until the offspring were born. The rats in both the GDM group and control group wer… Show more

“…to the development of GDM and oxidative stress. Previous study showed that the omega-3 fatty acid had lipid-lowering potential during the various pathological conditions (Xu et al, 2020;Yang et al, 2017). Our experimental study showed that the GDM group rats exhibited the abnormal alteration in lipid metabolism in plasma.…”

“…GDM disease also boosted the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes such as spontaneous abortion, fetal dysfunction, stillbirth, macrosomia and intrauterine growth restriction. Congenital abnormalities of fetal, critical organs account for 6%-10% of all pregnancies, a 2-5-fold increase over simple healthy pregnancies (Tian et al, 2015;Xu et al, 2020). Because the causes STZ nitrosourea compound isolated from soil microbes (Streptomyces achromogenes), is a widely used chemical (low and high doses) for inducing diabetes (type I and II) (Kumar, Ahmed, Gupta, Anwar, et al, 2013;Kumar et al, 2020).…”

“…Surprisingly, puerarin, the main active and characteristic marker components for Pueraria lobata in Chinese Pharmacopoeia (The State Pharmacopoeia Commission of China, 2020), exhibited low OB and DL. Nevertheless, puerarin had lipid-and glucoselowering effects in the treatment of obesity and DM [26][27][28], together with anti-inflammation effects, and the improvement of cardiovascular problems [29][30][31]. In summary, it was reasonable to believe that the 19 differentiated compounds could be listed as potential effective pharmacological activities for Pueraria lobata (Table 1).…”

“…It is well-known that puerarin protects cells against oxidative stress [ 15 ]. Puerarin can decrease the expression of TNF-α and ameliorate insulin resistance in gestational diabetes mellitus rats by reducing glucose and lipid metabolism disorders [ 16 ]. However, as with other isoflavonoids, puerarin insolubility often limits its bioavailability.…”
