Anti-inflammatory Action of Curcumin and Its Use in the Treatment of Lifestyle-related Diseases

Abstract: Chronic inflammation plays a significant role in lifestyle-related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and obesity/impaired glucose tolerance. Curcumin is a natural extract that possesses numerous physiological properties, as indicated by its anti-inflammatory action. The mechanisms underlying these effects include the inhibition of nuclear factor-kappaB and Toll-like receptor 4-dependent signalling pathways and the activation of a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma pathway. However, the bi… Show more

“…Its anti-inflammatory effect which is equivalent to that of steroidal and nonsteroidal drugs, e.g., indomethacin and phenylbutazone, is one of the most studied properties [ 8 , 12 ]. In various inflammation-related chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity, curcumin has shown good therapeutic effects [ 13 ]. The pivotal role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis has been documented.…”

“…Polyphenols like curcumin, capsaicin, apigenin, oleandrin, quercetin, resveratrol, cinnamaldehyde, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, etc. are well known for their anti-inflammatory properties [ 194 , 195 , 196 ] and mostly act through arachidonic acid dependent and independent pathways. While the former involves COX, the latter is generally mediated through NF-ÎșB.…”

“…Several preclinical and clinical studies have proposed that the route of curcumin administration is an important factor in terms of its serum and tissue levels [ 138 ]. Curcumin-loaded polymer nanoparticle systems are therefore intensively studied [ 139 , 140 ].…”
