Anti-hyperglycaemic activity of swietenia macrophylla king (meliaceae) seed extracts in normoglycaemic rats undergoing glucose tolerance tests

Abstract: BackgroundSwietenia macrophylla King (Meliaceae) is used to treat diabetes mellitus in Malaysia. This study aims to evaluate the anti-hyperglycaemic potential of petroleum ether (PE), chloroform (CE) and methanol (ME) extracts of S. macrophylla seeds, in normoglycaemic and streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats.MethodsFollowing treatment of normoglycaemic rats with S. macrophylla seed extracts, hypoglycaemic and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests (IPGTT) were performed, and blood glucose concentration… Show more

“…For instance, diabetes is a risk factor for AD and cognitive decline in general [224]. Phytosterols, and in particular fucosterol, have been shown to be anti-diabetic and might therefore modulate cognition indirectly [225][226][227]. However, despite recent advances, longer-term prospective translational studies are mandatory to elucidate the applicability of phytosterols in CNS disorders.…”

“…Thus increased attention has been given to the search for personalized antidiabetic candidates. Hashim et al investigated the response of Swietenia macrophylla seed extracts in different in vivo and in vitro diabetic models and validated their antihyperglycemic properties . Swietenia macrophylla King (Meliaceae) is traditionally used to treat diabetes in Malaysia.…”
