Anti-Helicobacter Pylori Therapy in Primary MALT Lymphoma of Rectum

Abstract: Primary rectal MALT lymphoma is a very rare entity among extranodal MALT lymphomas and its therapeutic management has not been standardized. Different approaches including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been proposed in the last decades. There have been reports on complete responses after anti-Helicobacter pylori therapy, also in patients without serological or histological evidence of Helicobacter pylori infection. In our patient we obtained a complete response with anti-Helicobacter pylori thera… Show more

“…The significance of eradication therapy for non-gastric intestinal MALT lymphomas is unclear, but there have been reports that rectal MALT lymphomas were eliminated following eradication therapy [17,18]. The H. pylori positivity rate among patients with gastric MALT lymphoma in this study was lower than that in previous studies [19].…”

“…Several antibiotic regimens have been used for eradication therapy, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) with clarithromycin and amoxicillin as first-line eradication therapy, and PPI with metronidazole and amoxicillin for second-line eradication therapy. Twenty-six patients with gastric MALT lymphoma and 4 patients with non-gastric intestinal MALT lymphoma underwent chromosomal analysis, but no characteristic t(11,18) mutations were detected.…”

“…Isaacson and Wright firstly reported MALT lymphoma in 1983 [1], and treatment for cases in the stomach is well developed. Gastric MALT lymphoma has shown to be closely related to H. pylori infection [2][3][4][5][6], and antibiotic treatment to eradicate H. pylori is currently well recognized as the first line therapy for stage 1 or 2-1 (Lugano staging system) gastric MALT lymphoma.…”
