“…Nucleolar staining has been observed in 8-48% of SSc patient sera (6-10), 12-52% of which have been positive for anti-U3 RNP antibodies (6,9,12,13,27,29). Anti-U3 RNP antibodies have been detected in 5-8% of all SSc patients (7,9,(12)(13)(14).…”

“…Patients positive for anti-Th/ To autoAbs have a worse prognosis compared to those positive for anti-centromere autoAbs due to the high incidence of associated pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung fi brosis and renal involvement [6]. Anti-U3-RNP autoAbs are more prevalent in people developing muscular involvement in the course of SSc [7]. The clinical and serological correlations surmise a causal relationship between the specifi c autoimmune response and the disease phenotype.…”

“…The frequency of AFA differs across ethnic groups, ranging from zero in a large cohort of Italian patients with SSc (7) to 50% in an African American SSc population (8). The higher prevalence of AFA in the sera of African American (AA) patients with SSc has been noted in several studies (9)(10)(11)(12)(13).…”
