Anti-DNA antibodies of IgA class in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

Abstract: Sera obtained from 53 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were investigated for the presence of immunoglobulin class-specific antibodies against native (ds)DNA and denatured (ss)DNA. The methods employed were the Crithidia luciliae test and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. Anti-dsDNA antibodies of IgG class were seen in 42%, IgM-anti-dsDNA antibodies in 43%, and IgA-anti-dsDNA antibodies in 30% of the patients. There was an association between the presence of both IgG- a… Show more

“…With the lower cutoff, the prevalence of IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies was 36.9%, with the higher cutoff 19.9%. In agreement with these data, in 33% to 63% of SLE sera IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies have been detected in previous ELISA assays using cutoffs, which are comparable to our lower cutoff [9,10].…”

“…Furthermore, no correlations of IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies with the symptoms proteinuria and increase of serum creatinine were found. Therefore, an association of lupus nephritis with IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies is unlikely, and differences from other studies are probably due to the larger patient population examined in this study compared to only small groups in previous studies [9,10]. Similarly, we could not find an association of IgA anti-dsDNA antibodies with arthritis.…”

“…In fact, IgA autoantibodies are also detected in some SLE patients. 31,32 Therefore, B6.Sle1Sle3 strain may provide a unique model for studying lupus. The detailed mechanisms by which combination of Sle1 and Sle3 mediates more IgA production remain to be investigated.…”
