Anti-Diabetic Effects of Phenolic Extract from Rambutan Peels (Nephelium lappaceum) in High-Fat Diet and Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Mice

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that rambutan peel phenolic (RPP) extract demonstrate high antioxidant and antiglycation activities in vitro and in vivo. This study further evaluated the anti-diabetic activity of RPP in a mouse model of Type II diabetes induced by streptozotocin combined with high-fat diet. Results showed that RPP increased the body weight and reduced the fasting blood glucose level of the diabetic mice. RPP significantly reduced the serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, creatinine, and g… Show more

“…However, treatments with orally administered methanolic, and chloroform extracts of 250 mg/kg significantly improved the body weight compared with diabetic control which signifies its protective effect in controlling muscle wasting i.e. reversal of gluconeogenesis, and subduing the free radicals produced due to hyperglycemia (Ma et al, 2017;Mestry et al, 2016).…”

“…Different researchers have studied the effect of the consumption of the rambutan peel extract on health, determining that this could be an important factor for the prevention of several diseases. In this sense, beneficial properties such as anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidants, antiaging, antiobesity, antimicrobial, anti-osteoporosis, photoprotective, and anticancer have been reported for rambutan peel extract [6,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…Moreover, rats treated with N. lappaceum extract showed signs of anti-hyperglycemia such as reduction in blood glucose level and improvement of glucose tolerance. Organ damage such as to the liver, pancreas and kidney was not observed in diabetic rats treated with N. lappaceum peel extract [60,61]. This result is supported by a study where rats that were orally administered geraniin from the peel did not show significant adverse results in body weight and organ, even though higher feed was taken by the rat [62].…”

“…The hypoglycemic actions of N. lappaceum were studied in vivo, in which the reduction in α-glucosidase and α-amylase enzyme activities were observed [60,61]. Moreover, rats treated with N. lappaceum extract showed signs of anti-hyperglycemia such as reduction in blood glucose level and improvement of glucose tolerance.…”
