Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies and paraoxonase-1 polymorphism in rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: BackgroundRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common chronic inflammatory joint disease, with a worldwide prevalence of 0.5% to 1%. Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (anti-CCP-2 Ab) is a marker of choice for diagnosing early and late RA. Anti-oxidant enzymes activity decreases in RA patients. Till now, the relationship between the rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-CCP-2 Ab, anti-oxidant activity and polymorphism of paraoxenase-1 (PON-1) 192 Q/R in patients with RA has not been investigated. In this st… Show more

“…Consistent with the relevance of PON‐1 function in HDL‐mediated cardioprotection, decreased PON‐1 activity has been related to an increased risk of cardiovascular events in the general population . Similarly, previous studies have revealed decreased PON‐1 activity in RA patients . However, the factors underlying this finding remain unclear.…”

“…Inconsistent results with regard to an association between CVD susceptibility and PON1 rs662 variants were reported in different conditions , thereby suggesting that gene–environment interactions could modulate the association between this PON1 polymorphism and CVD. Interestingly, although decreased PON‐1 activity has been found in RA patients , little is known about its relevance to CVD development.…”

“…Serum samples collected from patients were used for the ELISA test. A positive test was considered if levels were ≥5 U/mL 2. The diagnosis of RA was made based on the American Rheumatism Association 1987 revised criteria for the diagnosis of RA 3…”

“…El-Banna et al (2014) 14 have conducted a study on rheumatoid arthritis patients that showed that there was a significant correlations between rheumatoid factor and anti CCP antibody (ACCPA) titers and decreased PON-1 activity-hence increased cardiovascular risk in those patients. This indicates a significant association between decreased antioxidant enzymes activity and the serum level of rheumatoid factor and ACCPA.…”
