Anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide and rheumatoid factor in HIV positive patients

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the difference of anti-CCP and RF between HIV positive patients and a healthy control group. The rheumatological complications in HIV positive patients are rather common and are recognized as a serious problem that requires more attention. Anti-CCP and RF are the only laboratory tools for rheumatoid disorder diagnostics and predictors of the course of the disease. We determined anti-CCP and RF in sera of 35 healthy volunteers and 45 HIV positive patients. Data were compar… Show more

“…antinuclear antibodies, have been detected in higher frequency than in matched controls (10). Likewise, rheumatoid factor is found in every tenth HIV-infected patient (11), anti-neutrophilic antibodies in up to 42% (12,13) and anti-cardiolipin antibodies in 36-67% (14). Of note, these autoantibodies are generally present at low titres and may have little, if any, clinical relevance.…”

“…Which support positivity of anti-CCP in human immunodeficiency virus infection. 9,10 In this study, 30.2% cases of total pulmonary tuberculosis were sputum positive and 69.8% cases were sputum negative. Vikram et al, also had similar observation, their study had 29.0% sputum positive and 70.9% sputum negative cases of pulmonary tuberculosis.…”

“…ACPA have similar sensitivity as RF to RA but with a higher specificity (90-95%), thus, allowing more accurate diagnosis of RA, especially in cases of early undifferentiated arthritis (8,9). However, this test is not 100% specific, and ACPA positivity has been reported in a variety of diseases (21)(22)(23)(24)(25). As this case highlights, the presence of ACPA in the context of a polyarthritis should not exclude automatically other diagnostic entities, particularly in elderly patients with consumptive symptoms.…”
