Anti-corrosion coating using prepared binary self-healing epoxy microcapsules

Abstract: Self-healing materials possess the capacity to repair or mend themselves either by inherent response or under external stimuli and one of the most important approaches in self-healing is encapsulation. In this study, poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) microcapsules containing epoxy resin and amine hardener have been successfully synthesized via solvent evaporating technique with core/shell ratio of 1:1, agitation speed 500 rpm, temperature of 40 °C and 3% wt. of surfactant concertation. The synthesized system is … Show more

“…Previously, other researchers have studied this self-healing anticorrosion system based on epoxy microcapsules and amine microcapsules containing low-concentration polyamine aqueous solution. 18,28 Although the quality of the adopted microcapsules is not good, the self-healing anticorrosion function was achieved when the microcapsule concentration is high (15.0 wt%) and coating is thick (500 μm). 18 However, they only gave an experimental demo for the self-healing anticorrosion coating based on this two-part self-healing chemistry, but did not study the crack filling and healing behavior of the two-part self-healing anticorrosion system at the theoretical level.…”

“…Taking the advantages of the abovementioned microencapsulated epoxy‐amine self‐healing chemistry and its good compatibility with the epoxy host matrix into account, the introduction of this self‐healing system into anticorrosion epoxy coating is a promising way to achieve the above goals.
