Complete eradication of microbial biofilms and elimination of the smear layer are the key factors during endodontic treatment. Various chemical irrigants have been proposed in the literature for the same. The major setback with these chemical irrigants is that they are not bio-friendly to the dental and peri-radicular tissues. In the recent years, research to use natural products for root canal disinfection has gained importance. The aim of this article is to compile various herbal products that have been used as an irrigants and intracanal medicaments in the field of Endodontics to eradicate the biofilm and remove smear layer.

A B S T R A C T Diseases caused due to 'oxidative stress' initiated by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) is growing at an alarming rate. Several medicinal herbs explored till date were reported to possess numerous pharmacological properties used for combating different diseases. The present study was undertaken to investigate the inhibitory potential of Terminalia chebula by H 2 O 2 induced oxidative stress in THP-1 cell line and also the presence of the marker compounds in T. chebula was confirmed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Intracellular quantification of ROS was done using a flow cytometer. The percentage of gallic acid and ellagic acid in the extract was performed by HPLC were found to be 4.84% w/w and 2.56% w/w, respectively. Pretreatment of cells with T. chebula extract significantly reduced the intracellular ROS production in a dose-dependent manner. The present study illustrates the effective role of T. chebula in reducing the ROS production which is a causative factor for several disorders. The results describe the possibility and potentiality of natural sources to inhibit the pathogenesis of different diseases caused due to oxidative stress.

The aim of the study was to test the anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal activity of four medical plants extract the A.arabica, T.chebula, A.indica, and V.vinifera against the streptococcus mutants and Candida albicans organisms. The extracts obtained from the medicinal plant of A.arabica, T.chebula, A.indica, and V.vinifera was procured and powdered. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the obtained extracts was determined by using the tube dilution method, and the bacterial strains of Streptococcus mutants and Candida albicans were cultured into the extract obtained at a concentration of 1mg/ml, 500µg/ml, 250µg/ml, and 100µg/ml respectively. The extracts obtained from A.arabica and T.chebula had a better anti-bacterial property when compared to the other two medicinal plants and the extracts obtained from A.indica and V.vinifera had a better anti-fungal property when compared to the other two medicinal plants. These plants extracts showed the anti-bacterial property in previous studies to add on to the review of literature in our study it proved that A.indica and V.vinifera had a better anti-fungal activity when compared to another two medicinal plant extract. The clinical signi icance of the medicinal plant extract can be effectively used as an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent as it was compared with the gold standard values of Streptomycin and Amphotericin B.
