Streptococcus mutans is a common principal causative agent of dental caries. In this communication, we describe that the antibodies raised against purified dextransucrase effectively inhibited the growth of S. mutans. The purified enzyme showed 58-fold enrichment, 17.5% yield and a specific activity of 3.96 units/mg protein. Purified IgG fraction of the antibody showed significant affinity with the antigenic protein. Immunotritation of the enzyme with dextransucrase antibody showed a gradual increase in inhibition of dextransucrase activity. The growth of S. mutans was also inhibited by 85% in the presence of 28 μg of IgG fraction of the antibody. Antibodies also impaired glucosyltransferase activity (72.8%) and biofilm formation by 92.6% in S. mutans. Western blot analysis revealed no cross reactivity with the various tissues of mice, rat, rabbit and humans. Dot blot analysis showed little reactivity with Lactobacillus acidophilus and Staphylococcus aureus and there was no reactivity with other bacterial strains like Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. These findings suggest that antibody raised against dextransucrase exhibit inhibitory effects on the growth of S. mutans and biofilm formation with no reactivity with various mammalian tissues, thus it could be an effective anticariogenic agent.

Dental caries is an irreversible microbial disease of the calcified tissues of the teeth. It is a bacterial driven, generally chronic, site-specific, the multifunctional dynamic disease process that results when the PH drop results in net mineral loss over time. It is one of the most prevalent diseases affecting mankind. Cariogenic bacteria enter the dental biofilm early in life and subsequently invade the host tissue during favourable environment condition, to cause the disease. Many studies and researches show that this disease process can be interrupted. This article will give a clear idea of the method by which the host defence system can be aroused to combat dental caries caused by the crucial antigen related to Streptococcus mutans. Analyzing the fact that more effective public dental health care measures are needed to combat this dental caries, this article critically evaluates the recent signs of progress in the development of mucosal adjuvants, delivery systems for the dental vaccine, and also limitations of caries immunization.

Objective. To perform a bibliometric analysis of the scientific research on the development of vaccines against dental caries. Methods. An extraction of the scientific production published on the development of vaccines against dental caries between 2011 and 2020 was carried out from the Scopus database. Microsoft Excel was used for the elaboration of tables and SciVal for the bibliometric analysis of the data, which were divided into indicators of production, impact, and collaboration. Finally, VOSviewer was used for co-occurrence analysis of keywords and collaborative networks. Results. 106 studies were retrieved from the Scopus database, which were conducted on the development of dental caries vaccines within the years 2011–2020. Wuhan University, in China, was the university with the highest scientific production on the subject, with 4 publications. Regarding the most productive journals, the first place was occupied by the Journal of Dental Research with 7 publications. The highest percentage of the documents analyzed was in quartile 1 journals and in the national collaboration pattern. Conclusion. Most of the manuscripts regarding the development of vaccines against dental caries were published in China and in Q1 quartile journals. In addition, Yan Huimin, Yang Jingyi, Zhou Dihan, Yang Yi, Li Yuhong and Fan Mingwen were found to top the list of most productive authors. The Journal of Dental Research was also identified as the most productive and cited journal.
