Anti-cancer peptide-based therapeutic strategies in solid tumors

Abstract: Background Nowadays, conventional medical treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy cannot cure all types of cancer. A promising approach to treat solid tumors is the use of tumor-targeting peptides to deliver drugs or active agents selectively. Result Introducing beneficial therapeutic approaches, such as therapeutic peptides and their varied methods of action against tumor cells, can aid researchers in the discovery of novel pept… Show more

“…It has been demonstrated that shikonin (a naphthoquinone pigment extracted from the dried root of Zicao ( Lithospermum erythrorhizon, Onosma paniculata, or Arnebia euchroma, as a traditional Chinese herbal medicine) could block the phosphorylation of STAT3, decrease the levels of STAT3-targeted genes involved in melanoma survival and migration (Mcl-1, Bcl-2, MMP-2), and finally suppress melanoma growth [ 51 , 52 ]. In a different study, the inhibition of the viability and proliferation of A375 and A2058 melanoma cells was shown by the dauricine via blocking the phosphorylation-mediated activation of STAT3 and Src in a dose-dependent manner [ 34 , 53 55 ]. Recently, Meng et al have also evaluated the potent anti-melanoma activity of podocarpusflavone A (PCFA).…”

“…Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a malignant tumor of connective tissue, and has been known as the most deadly primary brain tumor [ 1 , 39 41 ]. Flavonoids such as quercetin are able to cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB) via different mechanisms, including carrier-mediated transcellular transport transcellular diffusion or paracellular distribution via tight junctions between BBB endothelial cells [ 1 , 42 ].…”

“…A change in this signaling pathway can influence pathological processes due to its important role in the regulation of biological processes because a malfunctioning of Janus kinase, JAK signal converter, and STAT signaling can lead to tumor formation [ 17 ]. Glioblastoma is a prevalent primary brain tumor in humans, and a highly infiltrative and extremely aggressive astrocytoma, which is characterized by resistance to apoptosis by radiation and chemotherapeutic treatments [ 7 , 24 ]. Several studies indicate that JAK/STAT signaling pathways are involved in the progression, migration, and invasion of glioblastoma.…”
