Anti-Cancer Effects of Queen Bee Acid (10-Hydroxy-2-Decenoic Acid) and Its Cellular Mechanisms against Human Hepatoma Cells

Abstract: Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common form of liver cancer that occurs in hepatocytes. Although many chemical drugs, e.g., cisplatin, methotrexate, taxis, and doxorubicin are used to treat HCC, there have been numerous reports related to the side effects of these drugs (e.g., emerging drug resistance, bone marrow failure, and gastrointestinal disorders). These issues led scientists to search for the novel anti-cancer drugs, mainly in natural products with greater efficiency and less tox… Show more

“…For instance, the cytotoxic dose of RJ was found to be 1.13 mg mL −1 for HepG2 cells. 40 Moreover, Stojanović reported the antiproliferative activity concentration of this compound as 1 and 2 mg mL −1 for HeLa cells. 41 In addition to the low-dose studies, treatment with 50 and 100 mg mL −1 RJ was found to be cytotoxic for PC3 cell lines.…”

“…56 Moreover, the G2-M arrest effect of the same organic acid was shown in HepG2 cells, proving our results of the G2-M arrest of GB cells. 40 The difference between the cell cycle arrest phase between SH-SY5Y cells and U373 cells may arise from the variation of RJ-triggered activation or inhibition signal transduction pathways.…”

“…Zafer et al found that 10-HDA elevates the expression of caspase 3, Bax, and miR-34a. Then, it increases necrotic and apoptotic human hepatoma cells [ 143 ]. Albalawi et al found that 10-HDA, in combination with cyclophosphamide, showed antitumor effects against Ehrlich solid tumors [ 144 ].…”

“…Compound G2 was then selected to treat HepG2 cells with different concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 µM) for 48 h, and IC 50 values were calculated using GraphPad Prism 8 software. Each assay was performed with at least three independent experiments [37].…”
